Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease. An infection of the tissues and bones that supports the teeth. It is usually caused by a buildup of plaque which contains bacteria, an invisible sticky layer of germs that forms naturally on the teeth and gums.

These bacteria can increase your risk for a host of other diseases. Sometimes, bacteria from your mouth can travel to your bloodstream, setting off an inflammatory reaction elsewhere in your body.
